Reviewing Steam Reviews

Back in 2015, Valve had the incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad idea to add a [Funny] button to reviews. Everyone begged them not to add this heinous ♥♥♥♥ for the consequences[i.imgur.com] it would bring but they did it anyways. Why? I don't know.

Now a measly 9 years later alongside adding other ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ censorship such as hiding """off-topic""" reviews,[i.imgur.com] they finally got the hint that "Oh! People want to know if a game is good when they go to read reviews, not to browse through 30 pages of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Who would've thought?"

God forbid they actually use more than two braincells and fix the problem itself by removing the [Funny] button entirely. But more concerningly, they are calling this a "new system" which is a blatant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lie[i.imgur.com] as it's been around since 2018, taking the form of a silent tool that wipes negative reviews off the store page.

They already had serious issues with how reviews are handled before this. Namely, reviews who clearly break the rules and get reported don't actually get any moderation action taken against them (unless it's extreme) due to Steam moderators being nepotistic[i.imgur.com] (2), incompetent lazy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.[i.imgur.com]

With these new changes, you can now simply vote any given review funny and have it disappear off the store page. You can also report them to have any non-steam links get instantly censorshipped too.

Thank you so much, Valve.

UPDATE:

They were initially not being powerabusing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about this but that has now changed. Posts are being mass deleted and they saw it fit to issue me a fictitious warning for "spreading misinformation" on the forum:

https://i.imgur.com/Cjix7P8.png

As of 2024-08-16, they closed the Denuvo thread citing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reasons.. Just to make two new ones.[i.imgur.com]

This will be a coverage of all the incessant lying, twisting of facts and floods of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that the developers of Game Dev Tycoon & Tavern Keeper has been spewing out in a thread on their forum about Denuvo trying to justify their use of it and ignoring every single piece of contradicting evidence they're presented with. You can read it all here:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/436780/discussions/0/4525638762700759640/

"Denuvo will not negatively affect their experience with our game."

Spoilers: It already has.[i.imgur.com]

Besides that, funding, manpower and time have all been dedicated to a scam DRM rather than the game itself. Purchasing options for customers have also been affected as it won't be available on GOG due to Denuvo. Additionally, the game won't run on Linux and Mac, performance will be adversely affected and much more.[denuvotruth.blogspot.com]

"You wouldn't believe the number of support requests we get from pirates. You wouldn't believe how entitled pirates get to demand our attention when they didn't even buy our game."

Every Steam game forum has a function that show if someone owns a game or not.[i.imgur.com]

There are additional features that can be turned on such as locking the forums to game owners only so trying to use this as an excuse is just asinine.

" "If Denuvo goes down, the game becomes unplayable." The same would be true for Steam."

Patently false.

"This process is invisible and requires zero interactions. You won't even notice!"

Not being able to play it without a daily internet connection is noticeable. The ♥♥♥♥ performance is noticeable. Not being able to mod the game is noticeable. Being locked out of it whenever there's a validation issue or when Denuvo's servers are down is noticeable.

"When installing new software or hardware, it's hardly realistic to stay offline"
=Context= They think Denuvo only does online verification when hardware changes.

This is what a Denuvo salesman told them and instead of testing it or doing 30 seconds of research to find out that Denuvo operates on timed locally stored licenses (that can be as short as days), they regurgitate this ♥♥♥♥.

"There is no always-online requirement so this unlikely case would only affect un-activated copies and obviously we would solve it ASAP!"

They can do absolutely nothing if a Denuvo server outage occurs outside of removing Denuvo entirely.

"No, not false. You do not have to be always-online."

You have online checks that can be day(s) apart[i.imgur.com] effectively making it always-online compared to games without Denuvo and this can be witnessed every single time Denuvo servers go down.

"if the game doesn't run - for whatever reason! - it's obviously a mission-critical issue for us so it would be the highest priority to restore it."

Since they spent so much time, money and manpower into buying and infecting their game with Denuvo and then arguing about it using false information, one can use basic logic to determine that it is in fact not a mission critical issue for them to have stable customer experiences.

"The claims on system stability and performance are equally false."

No.[denuvotruth.blogspot.com]

"I double-checked with Denuvo."

I'll let ChatGPT answer this one.[i.imgur.com]

"It's very unintrusive."

Denuvo is in fact intrusive and very likely illegal in the EU.[i.imgur.com]

"Countless games use Denuvo Anti-Tamper with millions of happy players."

Ad populum is a fallacy where mistakenly claiming something is true or acceptable just because many people believe or do it, ignoring their prior self-contradicting statement that you "can't notice Denuvo", leaving those "millions of happy players" clueless.

But let's use this logic to see the general consensus on what's good/bad for Tavern Keeper by looking at the forum...[i.imgur.com] Oops.

"Denuvo Anti-Tamper doesn't install anything. It's just part of our game (which itself doesn't install anything apart from the game files), if you remove the game, denuvo is removed too."

Denuvo creates and leaves files behind on the operative system even after the game is removed, as stated on their very own website.[i.imgur.com]

"It's clearly a silly argument to claim that there is a universal truth here."

No one claimed there was an universal truth in the thread. They were simply repeatedly given concrete evidence that they refused to look at and then later tried to falsely sum it up to this.

"The rest of the arguments here (including others) seem to assume arguments we never made."

They were precisely quoted repeatedly[i.imgur.com] and they chose not to respond in any meaningful or specific way.

"But I'm not here to debate - only pointing out facts."

They debated a lot using zero sources & proof and did not point out any facts.

Game Dev Tycoon Context:

1. Same developers as Game Dev Tycoon. As it released, they made a separate version of the game, sabotaged it and put it on piracy/P2P sites.

2. After awhile, they went to multiple press outlets and played the victim & cried about how "93% of players are pirates"... After uploading it themselves to pirates and having it garner more traffic than on Steam (naturally).

https://www.eurogamer.net/game-dev-tycoon-forces-those-who-pirate-the-game-to-unwittingly-fail-from-piracy

3. As this was going on, they hit 2-4 million (legitimately) sold copies and kept trying to play the victim.

4. Now they're creating this second game and infected it with Denuvo.

3 years in development (allegedly using stolen assets from a cancelled Nexon game) + most of the game consisting of purchased store assets and it's still a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess with no content:

Helldivers 2: PSN Account Now Mandatory

https://www.ign.com/articles/sony-is-forcing-all-helldivers-2-steam-players-to-connect-to-a-playstation-network-account-and-its-going-down-about-as-well-as-youd-expect

The curation for this game initially warned about this since there was a disclaimer on the store page but people could skip linking a PSN account. This was apparently only temporary and your ability to play the game will now be locked out if you don't link a PSN account. Their flimsy reasoning for doing this is to "ban people better", take that for what you will.

I recommend you don't create a PSN account since Sony suffers from catastrophic data breaches on an annual basis.

Denuvo's Newest Feature: Identifiable Watermarks

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/denuvos-new-feature-can-invisibly-watermark-your-game-footage-so-publishers-can-track-down-leakers/

This is in direct violation of EU's GDPR since identifiers linking to an individual is defined as personal data:

https://gdpr-info.eu/art-4-gdpr/ - (Article 4, section 1)

Not that breaking the law will stop these people from becoming increasingly more deranged with their DRM.

Steam Asset Flips: Still Going Strong

14 Oct, 2023 @ 12:02pm - Coe⁧⁧✔️[Quality Control]
ID: 5555811415906782699

Back in 2017, Steam promised to implement a zero-tolerance policy towards developers spamming the store with asset flips:

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/valve-removes-173-asset-flipping-games-from-steam

How is that going?

https://i.imgur.com/tNVJxCI.png

Not only are they spam uploading the same garbage over and over and over again with zero checks being done but they are also manipulating their prices, making singular titles cost 200-2000€ just to put them on a 99% sale.

Per their own price rigging policies[www.eurogamer.net], every single price change on Steam is placed under review.. And these are all being accepted.

On-top of that, they are also mass-bribing people to give them good ratings and/or are using bots.

Steam Telemetry & Unity & V Rising & More

Steam Spyware
Not too long ago, Valve decided it was time to inject a feature they got a lot of push-back in the beta which is the "urchin tracking module" into the mainstream Steam client.

It collects identifiable data (which Steam says it "makes private") before sending it off to developers (to probably sell) and unfortunately, it is enabled by default with no notification to you, the user.

You can disable it by going to:

https://store.steampowered.com/account/cookiepreferences

Scrolling all the way down and disabling it.

Unity
Unity has despite global & permanent fallout following their plans to start "taxing" developers for installations which they can never recover from, only partially walk back some of their planned changes:

https://www.gamesradar.com/unity-is-sorry-about-its-controversial-install-fee-but-isnt-removing-it-completely/

V Rising
Despite it's catastrophic Gloomrot release that required 10+ hotfixes and lost 50,000+ (85%~) returning players within the span of a month, the developers of V Rising has decided that the game will now be released in about 6-8 months time:

https://steamcommunity.com/games/1604030/announcements/detail/3730726309735320331
It took them about a year to release that horribly broken update and now they are going to do the rest of the game on an "updated" engine they have never used before while said game STILL hasn't been fixed. My review on it is still up to date:

https://bugs.playvrising.com/?order=top&filter=allexceptdone

https://feedback.playvrising.com/?order=top&filter=allexceptdone

TL;DR: V Rising will almost certainly release in a broken & unfinished state.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
After doing some digging, it turns out this game has already switched development studios 2-3 times and the game development studio (thechineseroom) is currently owned by TENCENT. The publisher Paradox Interactive is also partially owned by TENCENT.

Bonus: Go to the steam store and search for "Dice", then laugh at the appropriate result that has no mention of Dice in their name.
